First and foremost, know your budget. Once you have a basic idea of your max to spend, then research. Set a list of priorities. Example is the cake the most important part, the food, etc. Then you know where to "cut corners" and where to splurge. Also if you start picking your centerpiece ideas and such, you can begin looking for sales throughout the year, especially around the holidays. Congrats!

I think you'll want to set the date before he comes home, so you can go ahead and reserve the venue and such in advance. Unless you have a home church you know is likely to be available, venues may fill up their booking way in advance.

Plus, it'll give you both something solid to shoot for as you're waiting for him to come home. Just make sure you leave plenty of time after he is scheduled to get back to account for Army timing as well as last minute stuff and to let him adjust. :D
