At least in my neck of the woods, it's sort of expected that a bride will have at least one bridal shower, and a bachelorette as well, because they have different purposes/goals. However, I understand the feeling that the bridal shower just isn't necessary, at least gift-wise.

But, because I think bridal showers are just a nice way for friends and family to get together and celebrate the engagement/wedding in a casual, cute way that takes you away from the boringness of every day, I think there are definite ways to get around the whole gift-giving aspect.

For example, you can have a recipe shower, where instead of 'traditional gifts, each attendant brings you a copy of their favorite recipe. Free, AND it gives you something useful and new for a meal you may not have thought of or come across on your own. And then you can just hang out, play games if that's your thing, and maybe even turn it into a potluck so no one has to spend money on catering for a whole group of people, and you get to sample a bunch of stuff. :)

When my grandpa got remarried at the age of 69, we had a bridal shower for his wife (and she is just as old as he is!). It was actually a lot of fun. I really enjoy going to bridal showers because they're just simply fun. I enjoy couple showers more, actually because it gives you a chance to see the couple together, being excited about getting married. If someone can't afford a gift then they won't get you one! Go ahead and have one, this is the only time you'll ever get to!
