I went and googled "wedding hair" and "updos" and "wedding hairstyles" and clicked on their images link and it brings up a lot of updos :) Ive been getting ideas that way.
1) I've never been to a potluck wedding, and I have to admit that my initial reaction would be a little off-put. Mind you, I had the same reaction to a potluck Baby Shower and I ended up loving it. What I'm getting at, is I think it's a regional thing and personally I haven't been to any in the NorCal or SoCal area. At one friends wedding we catered it ourselves, the bride asked certain members of the bridal party, the mother of the groom and her mother to make specific dishes. Most of them were cold dishes, for a warm entree they hired the grill guy from Porter Street BBQ to grill up chicken breasts on site and serve them. It all worked out really well and there were a lot of yummy options. Another possibly cheap option is: Mobile Brick Pizza Oven Catering.
2)Alexander Valley Hall might be a little pricey if you don't live in the Alexander Valley, but looks really nice. Alpine Hall It was a $1,000 rental fee when I talked to the owner last year. Mystic Oak Gardens I don't know how much this costs. Sorry, I don't really know your

For getting inspiration for hair, I looked through the bridal magazines I bought, and cut out all the brides and bridesmaids heads whose hair I really liked, I then sorted through them for the ones I liked the most and pasted them all onto a paper as an inspiration collage, I took it to the girl who will be doing my hair and we talked about it. We are waiting until closer to the wedding to do a trial though, because my hair will grow more before then.
You might want to test the waters before you commit to a potluck wedding. Depending on where you're from it can be really upsetting to some people. If you were having your wedding where I'm from (SE PA) everyone would be like, "Oh awesome, a Quaker wedding!" Not so sure how the NorCal crowd will take it though.
Park Weddings can be great, I've been to several that were so much fun. Wedding and reception in one place. all you need is one with a nice picnic area! My favorite has always been Patrick's Point State Park in Trinidad, CA but that is a ways north of you. Wedding Rock there is gorgeous though (if you look really hard, you can almost see the person standing on it in this picture), and they have very nice facilities and the Redwoods are beutiful.

My hair was pretty long at my wedding (mid back) and I had it half up/half down, curled, with a little hair vine I got at www.veilshop.com.
Here's a picture from the side: http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u42/OnEdge28/firstdance.jpg
And here's one from the back (this was later in the night, the back curls had started to fall out. :-( ): http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u42/OnEdge28/cake1.jpg
