I wish I was flying back with a several day layover at MSP, but since I'm starting a new job on Monday with 0 leave accrued I can't swing it.

I think it happened when someone recently mentioned your proposal that he give you the award(which he did not seem opposed to) - in the email they linked to the thread which had your comment in it, presumably that is when he discovered it.
