Oh, brilliant! I've been thinking a lot about this kind of thing lately. It was Firefly got me started - that great quote from the final episode where Wash says psychic ability "sounds like something out of science-fiction" and Zoë replies, deadpan, "We live in a spaceship, dear." I've been feeling a lot lately like I live in science fiction. It all came to a head when I talked via Skype video on Saturday for the first time, with my brother and his family in Colo Spgs. You know how for decades video phoning was always around the corner, THE shiny tech of the future. And suddenly it's here.

I certainly enjoyed the bit of fun that the YouTube videographers had with the concept. It's certainly a mixed bag which is as one might expect.

I've been reading a lot of stuff from the 1890s and many of the observations are not unlike what you would hear from "peak oil" theorists of today. They were very worried of "limits to growth" and resource shortates and saw wind energy as one way around the looming problem.

One article talked about successfully using a certain approach towards extracting extra wind energy (using two different sized generators) that I thought was a Danish invention of the 1980s or 90s.

If you ever want to give me a ring on Skype, just enter my first and last name (no caps and no spaces) as the Skype ID. I had a nice chat with a friend of mine in Japan this week. It is pretty amazing.

And the narrative written by Louis Mumford. That was very much worth the download. Thanks!
