HP Wallpaper Tutorial for Photoshop CS2

Wallpaper is snaggable here
For Photoshop CS2, shouldn't be too difficult, I tried to explain everything.

DO NOT COPY EXACTLY.
Seriously, don't.

Everything has been resized from it's original size (1024x768) because, it's huge and I'm assuming dial-up users wouldn't appreciate it.

Firstly, I take a texture I got from Bruno's Honeypot.

I thought it looked a bit plain, and since I liked the border bit at the top, I selected around it, and Layer via Copied (Crtl+J) it and dragged it down the middle of the image, setting the layer to Multiply 100%.

Applied a layer mask to the layer and erased the areas I didn't want.

(layer with just layer mask to show what was erased)

Next I made a new layer, then selected around the area above the mask layer and filled it with white.

Then a Black and White Gradient Map Adjustment Layer over everything.

I then took three Harry images which I got from the Leaky Cauldron Galleries, pasted them into the wallpaper and resized them (don't remember the exact number, sorry) with the Transform Tool (Edit>Transform>Scale).

*working with the PSD, so it's just with the masks disabled

Now for the cutting them out of the background. This is something you should only do with high resolution, studio shots, otherwise it will appear really, really jagged and weird. Resizing will smooth out any jaggedness (that is, if you intend to resize..).
To demonstrate, I'm going to reopen one of the original pictures instead of working with the PSD.
Take your Magic Wand Tool and start selecting around the background. If nescessary, change the tolerance (in the top bar, mine's at 35).

CLICK
*Scaled down to 50%

Keep right-clicking around the background and going Add to Selection until you have everything but the subject (or whatever else you want to keep) left.
CLICK
*Scaled down to 25%

Next what I did was I then right-clicked on the layer in the layer palette and selected Layer from Background. Then when you click to add a layer mask, it will work. Just right click and select Select Inverse, or it will erase everything but the background.

CLICK

Now back the wallpaper.
That's basically what I did with the Harry shots. Made them into layers, did that technique, then dragged them into the wallpaper and resized them til I got them how I wanted them.

Since at the bottom it shows some of the white left over from the magic wand tool, I was lazy and wanted an easy way to cover that up, so I took a texture I got from letsbebad and set it to Multiply 100% and since it was much too small, I made it larged by using the Transform Tool and stretched it over the bottom (I don't recommend doing this with textures most of the time, but this was blurry already and it looks ok).

Then I took a texture from Textura and set it to Multiply 100%

Definitely doesn't look that great does it? I did like some of the effect the middle and bottom bits had, so I chopped it up into 2 parts, one layer for the yellow bit and one for the green.
I'm not to sure everything I did, just that I stretched certain parts to fit.

Yellow layer set to Multiply 100%

Green layer set to Multiply 75% and 75% Fill Opacity

Now I thought it was too dark (so fussy) and I wanted to bring back some red to it, so I took a soft, blurry pink texture by yumei_k and set it to Soft Light 100%.

Still not colourful enough for me, so I took another blurry colourful texture, this time by tihana (Avaliable here), and set to to Soft Light 100%.

Now since the center of the wallpaper is supposed to be the Harries, I did this thing where you merge the layers (in this case, the Harry mask ones), copied them, then go to your history and go back before you do that and paste it in. Well I did that after applying a black and white gradient map to it and I set that to Soft Light 100% and duplicated it once.

Note that some of the steps are out of order as to how I originally made it, since I tend to experiment and this is just with the PSD, not the history and I tend to go back and change things later on.
