How to make
from this

this is the lighting technique I used on the icons in this post

For PHOTOSHOP CS2
Don't know how translatable this is, ask around and somebody might know if you're stuck

I took this this pic, did all the autos (levels, contrast, colour) and cropped it like this

Then I duplicated the base and set it to Screen 100%

Duplicated it again and set it to Multiply 100%

Quite dark now isn't it? We'll fix that up.

Next I made a curves adjustment layer (don't you feel the trendy?) with these settings:

Then I made another with these settings

Then I merged the base layers together (make sure you leave the curves out) and sharpened the base.

Then I duplicated the base and desaturated it and dragged it to the top

Flipped the base over horizontally (Edit>Transform>Flip Horizonally)

Then I resized the base to 50% of its size with the Scale tool. (Edit>Transform>Scale)

Then I took off parts of the edges with the Polygonal Lasso tool You don't just select and delete. Right click on the image and go Invert Selection or else you will delete the part you wanted to keep.

Then I moved the smaller one a bit to the side since I didn't want it to completely cover up the base.

Next I took a 100px brush with 00b4da and placed it randomly over the center

Lastly I set the layer to Screen 100%

I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH, DON'T COPY THIS TUTORIAL EXACTLY. USE THE TECHNIQUES, BUT DON'T MAKE A CARBON COPY
and if you do, since nobody ever really pays attention to this part, don't enter it in a icontest either, since it's not your work is it?
