I watched The Lost Boys tonight for the first time. Yeah, yeah, hadn't seen it before. Tomorrow: Buckaroo Banzai! Which I also haven't seen before. Hurrah, it will be good, I know it.
That was the first ever horror movie I ever saw in the theatre. I forced myself because I was so in love with all the actors in it. My dad had to take me because it was rated R. I sat in a row three seats behind him because the idea of watching a movie that aroused my lust with my dad was too grody.
I adored that movie when it came out. A year or so after, I was at a sci-fi con in Dallas and had a change to buy a 5' by 5' version of the movie poster, printed in French. It would have taken my last $35, and left me with no food money for the trip back.
I hope you enjoy Buckaroo Banzai! It's one of my favorites. When it first came out, the first time I watched it I had some trouble figuring out what to make of it; it has an odd combination of absurdity and seriousness, that generally doesn't club you over the head with how funny it's being. Some of the best bits go by so quickly or subtly that I didn't notice them until the 2nd or 3rd viewing...
"What's that watermelon doing there?" "I'll tell you later." "Hey man, nice jacket! What's in the big pink box?"
I think that and "Repo Man" may be my two favorite films of the 1980s. Oh, and "Blue Velvet". And "The Company Of Wolves". But NONE OF THAT JOHN HUGHES CRAP.

To this day, I wish I'd bought the damn poster.
