I like some country. What's called "outlaw" country, stuff that Nashville and mainstream country radio doesn't play: Ray Wylie Hubbard (a gnostic vegetarian), David Allen Coe, John Prine. A lot of stuff written by Steve Goodman and played by others. Also old classic country: Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson (who has an amazing crossover reggae album called "Countryman", Hank Williams Sr., Chet Atkins. I'm definitely going to check out Cracker.
You'll likely recognize a number of their songs from '90s radio, e.g. "Low." Good stuff. Great lyrics. The frontman used to be in Camper Van Beethoven. Thanks for the recs!
I still wanna visit (and I am female), just not sure when! When would be a good time? I am taking time off 2/18-21 and memorial day weekend so probably not around then.
My combo breaker is a woman who'll be here 2/18-21 weekend :) February and March are filling up already; April is totally open, though I plan to leave the island for Easter. Birthday trip...?!
Birthday trip sounds good, it falls 4/21, which is a thursday. I am guessing you won't have a lot of weekday availability so could I like, fly out Friday and fly back monday?
Sorry I missed you when you were in town! We, um, went on a freezing cold pub crawl in Kenmore on Thursday night, and then the boy called in sick to work on Friday morning so we could sleep in and get brunch at 2 PM in ...Snohomish, I guess? So I figured I could touch base with you on NYE while he was at work, and then he ruined that plan, whoooooops.
Would've been nice to see you! I'm sincerely glad you're doing well.
Are there times of year that are better or worse to come do the cave thing? I would really love to, but for the next few months my finances are likely bound up in the house.
Hmm. You can't go if it's been raining too heavily, since the underground river rises too high to be safe. I can call them and ask when the best time is to go. What's the lower bound for when you will have some financial wiggle room (the upper bound being September when I finish work)?
Gahhh, still upset I missed you while you were in Seatown; I've still only left the apartment once for a social thing since Christmas (still can't shake the sickness completely, and I swear The Three Opinions From Hell are going to kill me before it's all said and done). You did manage to bring my out of LJ hibernation, though.
Yeah, I'm in pretty deep hibernation mode myself these days. Damn it, I spent so much time up near SU, too. :/ (If only this were 2008! ....wwwwhen we never did manage to hang out very much despite only living a couple miles apart!) Another time! Or, come down here!
Re: 2008: that's largely on me for failing to strike while the iron is hot, grabbing the bull by the horns, gerunding the figurative noun. I'm STILL stuck in the Peter Pan mode of thinking that there's plenty of time for everything and being shocked/regretful when I'm suddenly 28, staring at my office paunch, and disbelieving that life moves so fucking fast now.
And I was thinking of inviting myself down because JESUS CHRIST, SUNSHINE. And good company, of course. Will look into it. And a dear friend just moved to San Fran, so I have even more incentive to get off my ass and be take weekend jaunts in the future.
