I hear there's lots of openings in Illinois, regarding that last comment....
As to the rest - a really thoughtful, interesting little essay, Doug. I had the move-around thing going pretty steadily because of my Dad's work until 2nd grade (I remember six moves already in that time) when we went to Illinois, and then I switched to the stay-in-that-place-until-college mode, so I really count myself ultimately as having had the opposite experience from you. No, I can see why there might not ultimately seem to be much there to pick up on, other than the Facebook squint at one another's lives, but on the flipside, should one of these people pick up one of your "who wants to have dinner when I'm in D.C.?" offers, well, I wouldn't not be open to such a thing, within reason. Who knows what old friendships might have potential in them? That's a lot more believable than the football....
I always find it interesting to hear another brats take on growing up in the military. Like you, moving every couple of years and reinventing myself was intriguing and exciting. It was a bummer leaving old friends behind, but there was the excitement of making new friends that glossed over the negative
( ... )
I have also had some issues with Facebook "reunions". However, I do remember all the people that I see on there--and I am not in a single picture. Pictures of my gymnastics team, pictures from lunch with all the people I hung out with. So, my problem isn't that I get a snapshot of myself in those years, but I have started to ask myself--was I even there? And how is it that anyone remembers me?
