If we'd put all the time and effort into Afghanistan for the past five years that instead has gone into Iraq, we've have found bin Laden (probably by "invading" western Pakistan, with Musharraf's "permission," of course), completely destroyed the Taliban in that region, set up a more powerful pro-western Afghan government and began modernizing that country, and relayed that as the model for a new Middle East democracy and our foothold in the region. Oh, and Saddam would still be in power and still not have weapons of mass destruction.
