On November 29th 1864, a 700 man strong force of Colorado territorial mounted militia led by Colonel John Chivington massacred at least 150 Cheyenne and Arapaho noncombatants camped at Sand Creek in the Colorado Territory

Yes, I know he was a Methodist minister. I assume the church condemned his actions, but I've never thought to look for the historical record.

He was a fan of Cromwell, and liked to repeat Cromwell's "Nits make lice" line when justifying the killing of children.

I resolved many years ago that if I ever heard those words coming out of the mouth of an American officer, spoken with serious intent of justifying the murder of children, I would shoot him on the spot.
