Yes, I know he was a Methodist minister. I assume the church condemned his actions, but I've never thought to look for the historical record.

He was a fan of Cromwell, and liked to repeat Cromwell's "Nits make lice" line when justifying the killing of children.

I resolved many years ago that if I ever heard those words coming out of the mouth of an American officer, spoken with serious intent of justifying the murder of children, I would shoot him on the spot.
