I'm not sure what happened, but my TV addiction became much weaker as soon as I posted about it.   Of course, this coincided with the arrival of a bad cold, but yesterday I got new tires for the car, and today I'm filing some papers.  Just to give you an idea of how far behind I am, I hadn't set up my 2010 file yet.  I'm working really hard on not ( Read more... )

I think that it's quite typical to become more anxious when you actually start to focus on getting the things done that you need to do rather than pretending that you don't need to do them. It's one of the reasons why actually earning a Ph.D. is much harder than just hanging around as a doc student, and why the last pre-tenure year is an exercise in terror. That's my take on the situation anyway. (BTW, I've decided that "T & P Disorder of Adulthood" shares a lot of symptoms with "Dissertation Disorder of Adulthood" although it seems to me that there may be even more intense distractibility, irritability and emotional lability in the T & P version.)

Yeah, I know it's quite common to feel more anxiety when you're doing this stuff, it just seems unfair that that's the way it works. Of course, my basic motto is "Life isn't fair," so that's no surprise.

I'm truly sorry to hear that the tenure year is even worse than dissertating. I'm so impressed with you for the way you keep working in spite of the terror, etc.

Well, I actually just added the bit about the T & P Disorder of Adulthood because it makes me laugh. Since you'd given me the article about the Dissertation disorder lo those many years ago, I thought it might give you a chuckle too. We humans sure do become crazy when we are going through these things!
