We must all hang together
or assuredly we will hang separately.

Story
Our Last Resort is ultimately a story of survival - the tale of a revolution in a time of trouble. The character you play in this game has the power to affect change in this dynamic world - the plots will develop according to the actions (or inactions) of your characters.

Understanding your world will ultimately help ensure your survival. Please read over the information very carefully. If you have any questions about the world, or the game in general, please feel free to contact the mods and ask.

Setting
The current action takes place in New York City, in the year 2012. New York is an occupied city - under control of the Guardians. Humanity is at a distinct disadvantage - but they are banding together to try and trip the odds. Guardian Centers throughout the city act as office buildings (and troop deployment) for these supernatural oppressors. The news media is very much under the new regime's control, though there may well be certain underground publications that a lucky individual could find. Gangs, bands of rebels, or just small groups trying to survive are common on the streets and in the sewers and subway tunnels underground. Most are fiercely territorial, and they have no central leadership as yet to organize a true revolution. Perhaps the time has come.

People
Guardians are supernatural beings in control of the majority of the world. The majority of the populace is pretty clueless about the true nature of these creatures. They're certainly human in appearance, though there are some key differences. They are paler, with cold (almost clammy) skin and bright eyes. Conspiracy theorists call them either 'aliens' or 'demons'. The truth is known only by a select few... and the Guardians themselves. Guardian troops wear black uniforms of a lightweight but strong material.

Fifth Column - This subversive group disagrees with the Guardian leadership's policies, and seeks to assist the human resistance where possible in order to bring about the administration's downfall. Little is known about their numbers or organization, other than the nickname of their leader - M5.

M5 is the codename of the Guardian Fifth Column leader. Not much is known about his true identity.

Friends of the Guardians - often shortened to just The Friends, is a human youth corps founded by the Guardians. The uniform of a Friend of the Guardians is a dull gray with black stripes that indicate one's rank in the core. Some Friends go on to become a part of Guardian military units after reaching the age of 18. Thought of by some as a prestigious organization, but some humans look down on the Friends as collaborators, or government narcs. They publish a monthly magazine called The Visitor, which is little more than pro-Guardian propaganda.

Resistance groups crop up all over the city. Some are more successful than others. Each group is as varied in methods of organization as the individuals themselves, but they all have one common goal - thwart the Guardians wherever possible. They'd like to see an end to Guardian rule and have humanity return to power.

The Immortal is Hans Varner, a former Nazi who is cursed to immortality as a result of his war crimes. He is bringing his friends into the city in an attempt to tip the scales and find his own absolution in the process.

Character Choices
The great majority of characters will be humans, though it is certainly acceptable to play a human with special abilities such as a witch or a psychic. Keep in mind that these abilities are rare - so if we start to see too many of a particular type of special ability in the game, we may limit these characters in the future. It is also quite possible to play a lycantrhope (ie: werewolf), vampire, demon, totem warrior, etc. - if you bear in mind that this character must have a reason for being on the side of humanity. Yes, all characters must be 'good guys'. They can have their own selfish reasons for wishing humanity success (ie: don't want to be a part of the Guardians, don't want the food source taken away) and helping out the cause, but no villains will be accepted. Guardians who are members of the Fifth Column are available for play.

Characters can be leaders or members of a small resistance group, underground newspaper printers, anarchists with a fanatical spin to the cause, former Friends of the Guardians who've seen the light - use your imagination and the possibilities are endless. It's a big city, and there's a lot of people who are trying a lot of different things to make a difference.

Occupation-wise, you have a similar wide spectrum. Maybe your character was attending medical school before the collapse of the educational system, and now he's running a traveling clinic. Or maybe he was a drifter who never found his niche in life, until he picked up a gun for his species. This game is wide open to your creativity - the more detail you want to put into your character's background, the better.

You may play an original character of your own creation, or a character from anywhere that you have adapted to fit the world. If you choose to play a fandom character, please adjust them according to the circumstances of this world and have a valid reason for them to be here - you can indicate what this is on your application.
