Fuck, this swine flu thing is scaring me.

I'm such a hypochondriac, and the media is REALLY blowing everything up (i.e. the language that they're using is very... panic-inducing), so reading/watching the news is not good for my nerves. I should probably stop.

Nothing to worry about yet, turn off the news. As someone pointed out on naturalliving, more people die per year with good old regular flu than have with this swine virus. It's a huge moral panic right now, and sadly it's customary to blame the spread of viruses on bodies of colour (swine flu linked to origins in Mexico).

I've completely avoided reading or hearing anything about it so far, so I don't panic. Whenever they start talking about it on TV, I change the channel, and I click away from anything about it online. Ignorance is bliss, I guess. I did the same thing with that bird flu thing.

See, I got myself extremely paranoid about that Y2K thing back in 1999. That's partially why I went to Paris for 5 weeks that September and didn't care about the credit card bill. I kind of thought we were all F'd after midnight on 12/31/99... But when nothing really happened after that, I stopped reading the news and stuff, realizing how they blow things out of proportion and how sensitive I am to it.

Periodicity = 33 years. We went through this when Ford was president — panic about the disease, panic about the vaccine. I’ve never had a flu shot in my life and I’ve lived to brag about it. Slow day on the news beat — if it’s not swine flu, it’s bird flu ... or Y2K ... or the epidemic of adolescent obesity (can you imagne having to fuck fat kids?) ... date rape drugs ... serial killers. If you’re not scared, you’re not watching advertisements or buying things. Put this crap out of your mind and get back to Milton! B^)}
