I've always been a soprano 1, the higher the better type singer, but I've always used my softer "head voice". I was in a choir during my school years and I was an alto, which is totally in my range. The director taught us all how to use our diaphram to sing and push out instead of sucking in. I remember thinking it was a totally backwards way to do things, but when you learn exactly what to do, you don't run out of breath and have that extra umph and strength in your voice.
Ahhh, the memories!! lol
