We saw our first ever linnet in the garden today. We had to look it up to find out what it was, but it was very obliging and stayed on the feeder for several minutes.

I knew that linnets were popular caged birds in the C19th (see the song My Old Man (Said Follow the Van)), but I hadn't realised quite why - their song - until we went to Malta earlier this year (they're still popular as pets there).

Was that first Linnet in the garden, or the first Linnet you've seen anywhere ever? I'm presuming the former but "We had to look it up" suggests otherwise.
