Kyushu: Day One

May 10, 2008 02:15

Our first day in Kyushu is a bit of a misnomer, because Day One in Kyushu actually begins at 10 o'clock at night. Right after work, Annie and I took off across Shikoku in a race for the ferry. We were secretly determined to beat Steven, Nina, and Lisa to the port, however fell just short of the title even though we had an hour head start. It turns ( Read more... )

Fabulous! By the way, you totally stayed at the same place I did in Beppu! I recognize it! I found Beppu to be stinky beyong words and could hardly take it after 5 days, but loads of fun. The onsens there are beautifl, even if I did smell for a few days after so many baths in sulpher water. I couldn't bring myself to try an onsen tomago. To me, the whole place smelled like eggs, so the thought of actually eating one was disgusting to me. There's a sex museum there (I don't know why it was on our list to see there, but we did!) Totally tacky, but funny as hell. Those are awesome, awesome pictures.

You stayed in the Kokage? Really? Did you get it off Lonely Planet? Cause that's totally where we got ours.

And you must've been going by Lonely Planet because the sex museum is in there too! We wanted to go, but just didn't have time.

I could've have stayed in Beppu for more than 12 hours let alone 5 days. ;P

Glad you enjoyed the pictures. More to come!

Yeah, my friend Sara is a LP junkie and pretty much planned the whole trip out of there. The advice about the Hells was good. We saw them all and they were just okay. Not worth the time and money carting yourself to all 7 of them. There was a tee-shirt in one of the gift shops that said "Beppu: Everyday is Hell." I wanted one, but it was in Japanese and translating the shirt for people back home and explaining why it's funny would have taken all the joy out of it.

The guy who did our interview on TV was wearing that shirt! Lisa talked about wanting one too, but yeah you're right. If you have to explain the T-shirt, then it probably just isn't worth it. D:

(I would've bought one anyway and felt self-righteous. ;P)

Looks awesome. How does this compare to Osaka? Also, did you meet these people in Japan?

I want to go to Japan. Sooner or later we will finalize the trip.

Kyushu > Osaka x 10 > Tokyo x 100000000000000

Besides, Osaka is a city while Kyushu is an entire island. There's much more to do.

Yes, these people are all ALTs on the JET program. Lisa, Nina, and Annie are from the States, Steven is Australian.

I've factored Kyushu into our trip already. We simply must go. How long do you plan on coming again? I'm going to start putting together a rough itinerary.

How's the bronchitis?

Really? Should I fly into kyushu then? :-p

I plan on coming for 2 weeks. I think that's a good amount of time to do everything, yes? I could come for longer, but then I risk running into unpaid leave. I was thinking of coming up late on a Fri and maybe leaving the Friday after next. My dates are pretty flexible. Late september, early october seems like a good time when not a whole lot is going on. I will almost definitely come after labor day (cheaper flights)

Nah, I don't think you can fly into Kyushu. Don't worry, we can totally get to Kyushu pretty easily. It'll be Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Kochi, then Kyushu.

Two weeks will be awesome. Could you maybe look into taking a flight on September 12th? The 15th and 23rd will be holidays for me so I can cut my vacation time to a minimum.

Let's talk more about it soon! <3
