If he were asleep he probably wouldn't hear the small, hesitant knock on his door or an even more tentative voice calling out, "Bartleby?"

"Yes?" His voice is quiet.

"It's Claire," she says from the other side of the door. She won't be entering without his expressed permission.

"I. . .I brought you some soup and some tea. I thought you might be hungry."

"Thank you." Bartleby rubs his eyes.
