Tutorial: Mila Kunis #1

Nov 27, 2005 20:07

The lovely shadow_of_me requested I do tutorials on two of the latest icons to know how I did the coloring, so here I am.

How to get from this
to this
in PSP9.

Warning: This is pretty image heavy, so beware dial-up users.

1. I start with a picture of Mila's recent Stuff photoshoot (yum, btw) and I cropped one of the pics and resized it to 100x100:

2. I duplicated the base and set the dupe layer on Screen, 62% opacity.

3. I duplicated the base again, moved the new dupe layer to the top and set it on Soft Light, 58% opacity.

4. Now, I took this texture from anais_dirge,

placed it on top of my other layers and set it on Lighten, 100% opacity. I get this result:

5. Copy the merged image and paste it as a new image (aka, not on top of the base icon). We'll need it later on.

6. Now, I grabbed this texture, also from anais_dirge,

mirrored it and also set it on Lighten, 100%. I didn't like the end result much:

I thought about it, and realized that I could make it look the way I wanted, so I grabbed the Push Brush, with a small round brush, and I started pushing colors around, before adding, with a medium sized round brush some new colors and pushing them around to blend them in. It sounds pretty messy, and it is, but you see the result directly on the image. I stopped when I got to this result, which I liked a lot:

See? Pretty coloring!

7. Next, I added a small 10x100 white bar that I placed on top of the image, on Mila's right, so it's very close to her, but it doesn't touch her.

We'll need the little white bar later on.

8. I placed a small black bar (1x100) on Mila's left, right on top of the icon and set it to Soft Light so that it gives it a bit of contrast.

9. Now, I go to my other image, the one I copied and pasted before as a new image. It should look like the fourth step icon, which is this:

And crop it. I chose to focus on Mila's face, very close up. I place the image on top of my icon, and it should look like this:

See the lovely contrast between the icon's base and the new image? The new image is sharper, the details better rendered. Looks nice, doesn't it?

10. I created a new raster layer. I place it on top and I choose a small white brush (1 pixel width). I draw a line starting from the end of the white bar (right side) to the end of the icon, like so:

11. Still on the new raster layer, I select the square under the white line and after the side white bar, and I fill it with the color #e29b9e, which is a medium pink, like so:

12. Now, I grab this little decorative brush from unioncity:

I rotated it 90 degrees clockwise and set the size at 25 pixels. I used the same color as I did in my small pink box, which is #e29b9e, and I placed it on top of the white bar, like so:

13. Now, I needed some text, and what better text is there than the actress' name? Don't answer that. LOL

I chose a slightly darker pink (#d77b7f), Century Gothic size 18 bold, and with a 250 kerning. I rotated the Mila 90 degrees to the right, and placed it under the decorative brush and on top of the white bar (I told you we'd need it later). I then converted the vector layer to a raster layer and erased all the extra stuff. I got this result:

14. For the finishing touch, I copied the merged image, pasted it as a new image, resized it to 18x18, rotated it 90 degrees right and placed it on top of the icon, in the light pink box. And voila:

I hope this is somewhat useful, and that you all like it. I hope I was clear and that you all understood the tutorial.

Disclaimer: Feel free to comment and request any other tutorial. Also, duh, don't make exactly the same icon. And, don't snag this tutorial and the icon as your own and tell people you made it. Thanks, and if you used this tutorial, feel free to show me what you made with it. Enjoy!

Lalala, one more after dinner! Wee!
