though we're all pillars of salt now, it was worth it for the view

It doesn't take long to figure out when it happens. For two months, Elvis has gone to sleep beside Anabelle, the two of them curled up together, tucked away from the rest of the island in their hut on the isolated stretch of north beach, sunflowers just outside their window. It's like he imagines it would have been at home, based on what she told ( Read more... )

Eden hasn't been back from class long when there's a knock at the door. The sound at this hour always leaves her tense and unsure, but trouble doesn't usually bother knocking. Besides, Claire has early classes and Eden doesn't want her being disturbed if she's already asleep in there, so she hurries to the door and pulls it slightly open.

Peering out, her brow furrows and she steps back. She doesn't get a whole lot of visitors - Claire's much more social than she is - and though she's spent time with Elvis since he arrived, he's certainly not who she expects to see.

"Elvis," she says, "hi. Do you wanna come in?"

Elvis is relieved - more than, in fact - when it is Eden who opens the door, but the feeling doesn't last long, not nearly enough to counterbalance all the rest of it, that sense of everything being turned on its head yet again that he can't shake. Frowning, gaze not quite on her, he nods mutely, arms folded over his chest. All things considered, he doesn't really want to worry her, but there's no sense in pretending that something isn't wrong. He figures she'd probably have guessed anyway. Much as he's come to like her, this isn't his usual style at all.

"Yeah," he manages, trying to seem grateful, not quite pulling it off. He is appreciative, incredibly so, of the fact that she's here, that he has someone to go to at all, but it's hard to focus on that in the face of something like this. "Thanks."

In the chair across the room, Origami stretches and settles back to sleep instead of coming to greet him, and Eden shuts the door quietly. After just a second's thought, she starts toward her room, nodding for him to follow. If something's the matter - and she suspects strongly that it is - then there's no point in staying out here in the front room. If nothing else, Claire might come out to see what's going on, and Elvis is a private sort of person. He doesn't need an audience, however good Claire's intentions would be.

"In here," she says. "Have a seat. What's going on?" There's no point beating around the bush either. If he's come to her because something's gone wrong, then her first aim is to do whatever she can to help with that, not help him put off saying something.

At least he's here of his own volition this time. Though the circumstances haven't really improved much at all, it's a hell of a lot better being invited in than crashing onto her floor, leaving a rope hanging from her ceiling. Elvis isn't typically the type to be optimistic, but where he was trying to put things in that perspective, now he isn't sure if he's doing that or doing the reverse. Any attempts at positivity were only because of Anabelle's influence, after all, and while now, on one hand, he feels like he should still listen to that, on the other, he doesn't think he should care. She isn't here now to see what happens to him, so why should it matter ( ... )
