You can see him wanting to protect his friends as heroic and noble, but he has a lot to learn in that area. He gets effected too much by what happens around him and he runs head first into things when he feels a wrong has been made against those he cares about.
He once chose to seek out revenge on one of those pro-duelists, other than be with his sick girlfriend. He seemed quite at the breaking point too.
He needs to learn some restraint, both him and his friends do, or they're going to end up getting themselves killed.
