I am unfamiliar with manga, and when reading, tend to concentrate on the words. So I really had to slow down on this one, because the story is told in the drawings, not the words. Not to mention that despite a fascination with the Tokugawa period of Japanese history, there are cultural references that I know I missed.

Yoshinaga is a superb artist. She's especially good at conveying emotion by body language.
Ooku is completely different from anything she's done previously. Her earlier manga were mostly short, light-hearted modern-day slice-of-life series with serious undercurrents (Antique Bakery, Flower of Life) and explicit yaoi (m/m romances). I own copies of most of her stuff.
