that link doesn't work (the one to your dreamwidth entry) or at least it didn't for me. anyway, i read this book under the worst possible circumstances (partner had broken up with me but i was stuck there for another day and a half) so it's very memorable. and what i recall is that it was a little more sadistic than i could tolerate, only i didn't have another book and i didn't have the ability to sleep so i kept going. but parts of it are a pretty tough read. i think i liked claire better than you did, though i thought she was terminally stupid at catching on to the rules of the culture. overall, i liked it pretty well but the sadism made it unlikely that i would pick up any more of them.
