I need a parenting book for first time parents.  It needs to be relatively succinct, not preachy (and not too big would be good).  I'm considering Parenting for Dummies, Hardin Gookin; The Wonder Years, American Academy of Pediatrics; Caring for Your Baby and Young Child 5th Edition, American Academy of Pediatrics.  Thoughts?  Any others you'd ( Read more... )

Is this for you or a gift?

Because the only non-sleep related parenting information I've ever read that was actually helpful in any way was an article, not a book:

IF you want a book to give someone, this book is great and everyone should read it BEFORE they have kids that begin to have sleep troubles so they can nip them in the bud right away:

A gift, for both of Jamauri's parents. J and Jamuari's dad D love their son, but seem clueless about almost all aspects of parenting - psychology, nutrition, enrichment.
So it's not even just sleeping, it's everything.

I really like the article, by the way. It fits tangentially with a conversation I'm having with GoodBadGirl and Tapati about abusive relationships and intermittent reward.
But that's graduate level parenting class, and J and D haven't finished 2nd grade, as it were.

How To Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk

This is the book that taught me how to abandon the guilt and manipulation of my childhood for more conscious language. Has cartoon illustrations of situations and is easy to understand. Helps you understand where kids are coming from. A great template for talking to anyone. :)

This one is more about discipline, doesn't cover stuff about nutrition and so on.
