I grew up in the house where I grew up because we couldn't buy a house anywhere else. We could afford it, they wouldn't sell to us and it was LEGAL.

A great book about this is Warriors Don't Cry by Melba Pattillo Beals, who was part of the Little Rock 9. Thankfully she kept a diary and the book details the horrors that she went through. When I read it, I generally do it all the way through because it is so intense...and they were in high school. (I'm sure you know, but just to be sure, Little Rock was the first city where integration took place, and wherein we get this famous photo):
