Second installment, the first one can be found here.
I really am a sucker for covers, and you'd be happy to know,
there are no punk covers in this one either. :)
last nite; the detroit cobras
originally by the strokes.
first thing i noticed about this is the difference in intonation from the original. I'm pretty fond of The Strokes, so when The Detroit Cobras opens, I was (pleasantly) surprised. Rachel Nagy's voice is less rough and less explosive than Julian Casablancas', but it works pretty nicely with the accompanying guitars (by Mary Ramirez). The treatment of the song is genius -- it's familiar but you can't quite place what it is.
love vigilantes (live); voxtrot
originally by new order.
This is a live recording, so you can hear background noise. Surprisingly, the distractions don't really take away that much from the song. And, even greater: the song is still characteristically Voxtrot, you'd think it was an original.
just the way you are; maggie gyllenhaal
originally by billy joel.
I might've posted this, more or less, three (hundred) times. Her voice is sweet and sounds a notch more tender than 'throat-y.' It's a very nice cover, and I love it because it makes me love Maggie G more than I already do.
kid a; john mayer
originally by radiohead.
I started off not liking John Mayer, then he grew on me. And then he dated Jessica Simpson so that kind of killed his cred (ha ha) for me. However, this song is a redeeming "quality." It's a pretty good rendition of a pretty good song, so that's twice the fun. It makes me happy because it's not something I expected from him. I don't know why, but maybe I kind of like him again.
paris 1919; final fantasy with cadence weapon
originally by john cale.
This is a perfect song for Final Fantasy to cover. For one thing, Owen Pallett's voice is reminiscent of John Cale's, so it's pretty enjoyable to listen to them, one song after the other. (So much so that I am uploading the
John Cale 1973 original so you can try it.) Final Fantasy's rendition is a little bit sharper, edgier, whereas John Cale's violin work is smoother, a little more fluid. But the 'la la la' rolls off their tongues in an almost identical way.

walk on the wild side (live); the strokes
originally by lou reed.
I was originally going to just upload five covers, but this presented itself to me, and it's a great way to finish the post for two reasons: a) we began with a cover of a song by The Strokes, and b) we almost ended with a John Cale cover, who used to be bandmates with Lou Reed. Six degrees of separation, everyone. ANYWAY. This is here because I am irrevocably in love with Julian Casablancas. Also, it's a good cover, which is pretty much a win-win for you!
post script;
i am taking phrases and making mixes.
