Technically speaking, the Old testament doesn't even specifically bar lesbianism. Only male homosexuality.

I read a very interesting book on Jewish law and women's status that discusses this. There's a number of opinions on why they think this may be true. Probably the one that is most accurate is the theory that since men who spent all day with their heads stuck in scrolls wrote the law, they had no idea what the ladies were getting up to behind their backs - similarly to why there are no anceint laws against obtained abortifacient and contraceptive herbal potions in the OT.

By Roman times, they maybe had a better clue, so Paul threw that in there :P
