Thankfully, not to the same church

While driving home from work this evening, I read "YOU ARE LOVED BY GOD & BY US MERRY CHRISTMAS" on a marquee. This at least does not prompt the 'get off my team' reaction. It does, however, prompt me to ask the question, "What does love mean to you ( Read more... )

Curious - what would you put on a church signboard?

Good question. I'm not entirely sure what would get a positive response from me on a drive-by; I just know that most of what I see gets a thumbs-down.

The church that I attended for most of my school years had a sign out front, but there was no place on it for the Message Of The Week -- it just listed the name and a few details about the church, such as the hours at which we held services and the pastor's name. Anything more than that reminds me of a verse from Matthew, in which Jesus says (paraphrased), "Don't be a hypocrite who prays in public. All they want is for men to admire their piety, and that's the most they'll get out of it."

Ah yes, the "we LOVE you and want you to be HAPPY, and that's why we spend so much time nagging you about your faults, because you can't possibly be HAPPY until you do what we want" conversation. BTDT, so glad they're dead and I don't have to deal with it any more.

That's the conversation I'm having this week, with my students and others. 'Bout love. Mostly we're discussing the fact that despite the overabundance of words in English, there's a lack when it comes to useful words related to love. I love my new boyfriend and bacon. ...This is inadequate. The love I feel for one (okay, bacon) far outstrips (no pun intended) the love I presently feel for the other, but I've just got a handful of words to explain the gradations between the two, and really not enough words to discuss the (bacon-y?) flavor of my love for the new boy. Anyway, it's been on my mind lately that there's so much loaded onto the word "love" that it's very unreliable for conveying emotion anymore, because it can mean so many different things and is positively ripe for misinterpretation.
