No flags, but a question

I know that rolling one class and then roleplaying as another is a big no-no in general.  However, I'm curious to know what your opinions on class-bending might be--as in, starting to trade abilities off for those of another class.

I'm not talking about transitioning, either; I'm talking about the end product being a sort of hybrid of two classes-- ( Read more... )

As with every bad RP cliche, if approached properly, it could be done well.
As with every bad RP cliche, it's best to not attempt at all unless you're a good writer.

It's plausible, certainly. Certain abilities can cross over to different classes (like a hunter with a level of stealth and agility, a priest who has decent melee capabilities, and so on...) and in role play such barriers can blend together. It's when it starts to be implausible, or downright silly (example: a DK still able to use the Light = no way), that such barriers really need to be taken into consideration because to others the character will not be taken seriously.

If they want to do that, I'd really recommend they roll a version of the character for each class so they can switch at will or do so in RP, but, as was mentioned, it has to make sense.

It's also not a good idea to have them be equally awesome in both things; pick the 'favored' one and keep them strongest in that RP wise.

I know someone who is doing a DK/Priest and that makes no fucking sense, considering DKs are undead and the person in question is playing a Troll and not a Forsaken.

I know another person doing a paladin/warlock, which also makes very little sense as it's not a 'transitioning from one to the other' it's, "LOL I play with demons and the light!"

Things like that: Do not do.

Keep the bending to similar classes.

There's always the humorous approach. I recall the original Flintlocke's gimmick was that he was a warrior who thought he was a hunter.

"THA BEAVER-STICK!"

I'm okay with this. I do it a teensy bit myself, as do a few people I RP with. It makes sense. People pick up the skills of those they tend to associate with, or someone can just have numerous talents. Like a warlock that was once a mage, so maybe they know frost and arcane magic IC. Or a rogue that followed the Light and became a paladin, but he still knows his way around the back streets and how to disappear into the shadows. Stuff happens to people.

What's less cool are people that have multiple skills for no reason other than it's shiny. Med'an types.
