Mimi isn't supposed to die in the production... Like... she didn't die in the original.. They did the movie right... *confused look*

I'm not sure about the original ending. My drama teacher (the director of the production) told me that this was the original (mimi dying and the one where she lives is a hollywood ending 'cause the main stream american audience doesn't want a sad ending). I don't know though. But I like the version where she dies. 'cause even when she lives you know she's only got a couple of hours/days left.

Mimi died in La Boheme, the original opera by Puccini but John Larson didn't want his Mimi to die at the end of RENT because he wanted the story to end on a sort of up note and he didn't want anybody to take anything away from Angel's death. Also, in the whole stage thing. The reason why Mimi's above their apartment is because it's supposed to symbolize the fact that she's at the Cat Scratch club. It's extremely confusing, I know.

Wow .... don't know why I felt the need to go all "Explain" there ... this is what I get for reading Anthony Rapp's book. *rolls eyes* lol.
