I would describe 影 as "in the image of".

Yeah, and that's one of the meanings in Japanese too, but it doesn't sound right in English when you put it in a phrase like "she shrank down the the image of a flower". You want to say size, but 影 doesn't mean size... It's more like "shape"...

...Hence my conundrum. ^^;;
