I really end up enjoying Ghost Hound. Admittedly the plot itself ended up being sort of weak but I loved the characters. Someone compared it to "Stand By Me" and I think that is an apt description. It's about a bunch of boys looking for a dead body but really the dead body is just a front for a growing up story. I see Ghost Hound the same way, it's about these boys (and girl) who have all these weird OBE and so forth but really those are just fronts for a growing up story.
It could have been better but for what it was I really enjoyed it.
I will probably be a heretic but I actually enjoyed it more than Lain. Lain was interesting to watch once but in the end it just left me feeling cold and detached . I think this was what it wanted you to feel but yeah I guess I prefer series that leave me with a different feeling.
Yeah, it is a growing up story... and I enjoyed that bit of the show a fair bit (like the scene in your icon, ridiculously cute :D), but I guess the rest of it seemed a bit superfluous in that respect. I don't know how much Miyako really 'grew up' though, obviously she did somewhat but I still kind of get the impression she was more of a prop than anything for the latter chunk of the show
( ... )
I found GH quite enjoyable, DMC anime hilarious (and no I'm not into metal) and Eden is <3. Partly because I'm a Honey&Clover fan and Akira looks like a twin brother of the eccentric Morita-senpai... no.. I refuse to believe he is NOT Morita! 8) surely you can tell... XD
I remember the DMC anime trailer, that's the first instance of me ever coming across the franchise - and I found it HILARIOUS at the time, I'd think I might still like it (I guess I'm more easily entertained by moving things, too)
I give up on nitpicking over Eden, it's so much more fun to just watch it and giggle in a quaint manner. And I think everyone's been calling Akira Morita from day one! Seriously, it's like an AU where Morita-sempai is out to save the world and seeing as he was my favourite character by far in H&C I'm quite enjoying the ride :D
Thanks to Eden I'm actually rewatching H&C now. I have to confess that I never watched the second season (insert various reasons here), so it's a good opportunity to catch up too. ^^
No prob, kind of vaguely surprised you'd find them interesting :D
And yeah, the character designs in GH aren't to my liking really - some people like how the 'cuteness' and those uh... those eyes contrast in a nice, eerie way with the actual personalities of the characters, but I personally didn't really feel that way. I can't explain how, but it came across as more generic to me than anything. I couldn't take the show as seriously as I would've liked to, and somehow the designs don't seem diverse enough either (not that they're blatant copypasta faces, but it's like there's a few anime-perfect stock faces and anything outside of that tends to look rather ill-defined, like when hackeneyed shoujo artists try to draw old people)
Didn't quite care much for Jigoku Shoujo's character designs either, for that matter... looks like on a pretty, heavily detailed still shot but meh in animation, somehow.
1. that's a really cool website, thanks for the link! i like the interdisciplinary approach a lot -- haven't read all of it yet, but will definitely work my way through it.
4. i watched ep 1 of Ghost Hound back when it had just started, was vaguely intrigued, but never got around to going further. :\ do you think it's worth it? not that i have the time to pick up another series, haha.
5. i watched some DMC and was mildly amused, but too lazy to keep watching. i don't think you need to like metal to find it amusing, though. (and haha, i thought that most people don't like metal anyway, and that you'd be far more likely to receive o_0 responses if you'd said that you did like it...)
Eh, I dunno... you might've liked it because I think the theme/type of characters might be of interest to you, but the time it takes to go through all that as well as the execution are not quite worth it IMO. I forgot to mention but my mind kept thinking of Zettai Shounen (same strange happenings in a country setting, with disappearances and unresolved pasts), except I think Zettai Shounen was less overtly psychological and focused more on the sheer atmosphere... I think GH tried to do that to a certain extent but I think ZS did it better.
And I think I'd like the DMC anime without having to enjoy metal, it's just that the manga isn't exactly exciting me (I guess I can't do that whole 脳内補完 thing, which hinders my appreciation) I... thought it was 'unreceptive' to not enjoy metal :o Well maybe for girls it isn't so, I dunno. Yeah, need to get out more often. ;_;
hmm, okay, fair enough. thanks! i still can't decide how i feel about ZS, apart from that it was worth a watch. probably won't pick up GH then i guess.
mm, that's true -- i do find it easier to watch unexciting anime than read unexciting manga. anime's more immediate, or something. i think among the non-indie music intelligentsia it is indeed considered 'unreceptive' to not enjoy metal... unfortunately most of my friends who are interested in music do not seem very metal-inclined. with the exception of one close friend who is all about metal (and post-rock).

I couldn't watch past the second episode of Ghost Hunt. Something about the character designs...
