They always assign understudies along with the main cast list for every show. Tacchin is meant to cover Ume-chan from the beginning therefore it should not be the last minute decision. They also make it a rule to do a rehearsal performed by the understudies one time before the show opens.
I heard of a Hanagumi Elisabeth understudy rehearsal performed by Asako/Tod and Asuka/Elisabeth. In this case Asuka also took the shinko lead. When Midori was sick and unavailable for 3 days during the Tokyo run of Elisabeth, Asuka took over the title role to cover her absence.
BTW I've heard from a Micchan fan friend that Arisu-chan is an understudy for Machami's role in Dawn Wind.

Anyway, I hope to see Ume-chan come back to the stage soon!

AHH!! I thought I was going crazy! I knew I had heard about Asuka covering for Midori but couldn't find evidence of it (then again, last night I was distraught and not looking very hard >.>).

Then I've suddenly remembered that Ume-chan is currently in charge of Soragumi E to Bun for Kageki! Oh, I feel all the more sorry for her.
