HALP. I'm looking for book recs/author recs! Anything that's been published within the last couple of years. I think I need to read moar contemporary fiction. I'm not super keen on high fantasy/IN SPACE sci-fi but I could be persuaded, and other than that I'm open to pretty much anything ( Read more... )

I've been reading Connie Willis' Oxford Time Travel series, and it's SO GOOD. It's set in the 2050s, when the Oxford history department is made up of time traveling historians that observe key moments in time.

They feature the black plague, future epidemics, Victorian shenanigans, the London blitz, time travel twists and turns, explosions and lovely lady characters that are brave and interesting and have a special fondness for Agatha Christie books :D

Oh oooooh, that sounds VERY relevant to my interests! I might have a look for it in the library tomorrow.

I have joined a bookclub! It's a lesbian bookclub (I may have joined in an attempt to meet girls), but the first book was interesting. It's Wingshooters, by Nina Revoyr. I also read Jeanette Winterson's autobiography, Why Be Happy When You Can Be Normal, and Janet Frame's Towards Another Summer. They're all quite good.

And a friend of mine on my flist does really interesting self-published poetry and fiction (in a variety of genres). If you look up Delilah Des Anges on Lulu, you can find her stuff.

ETA: Towards Another Summer is neither anything to do with lesbians nor contemporary.

...have you read The Demon's Lexicon? It's really good YA urban fantasy. I'm a big fan of SRB, she's published one complete trilogy and has two new books coming out this year, so this is a good time to read her! She has freely available short stories available online, including extra bits from the universe of The Demon's Lexicon that you could read without being spoiled if you want to get a feel for her writing and her world before getting the whole book. If you wanna take a look they are all here: http://sarahreesbrennan.com/extras/... )
