The weird thing was that Sam didn't really notice the feathers first. He didn't; didn't think to look for the shadows of feathers because most of the people he spoke to everyday weren't angels. He noticed the pissiness first.
Sure, Castiel had been more than a tad sore-tempered since he last exploded, but there was a subtle difference between tetchy and pissy. It was the fact that instead of jumping on reasons to vent, Castiel just started venting at everything; the apocalypse, Dean's smart mouth, American pancakes - apparently Castiel had more of a taste for crepes - and maple syrup, Sam's shirts.
He also seemed to be disproportionately interested in chocolate despite the fact he still didn't actually like eating. He'd at least managed to take to drinking; but it was a little weird to have the angel ordering hot chocolate everywhere they went. Everywhere. And Sam was uncomfortably sure he was ordering and receiving hot chocolate in a few places that shouldn't have been serving it but had mysteriously decided to all of a sudden
