Some thoughts on some things the fandom has been discussing lately. (This isn't the rambly essay I had been writing the other day; that's still yet to come.)
I think the big problem a lot of viewers have is the inability to separate our own morals from the morals of the character.
Huge WORD on this statement. Character-as-self is perhaps the most central part of viewership, if we don't identify so much with the character, we don't empathise so much, and if we don't empathise then we care far less for the character's actions. And when we do care so deeply for these characters, and they then become divergent from 'us', we struggle to reconcile their actions with ours and there's a loss of empathy and connection. I don't know what my general acceptance (or at least excusing) of the boy's behaviours says about my psyche, ha.
(And how can you tell I'm a film studies graduate, haha.)
I like how you just squished four of my paragraphs into one xD YES. That is what I was trying to say. Only I'm not a film studies graduate, so I just had to stumble around in the dark until I found some words.
Haha - I'm just surprised I was actually coherent! But stumbling around in the dark also clearly works, because you make a smart, interesting point with this post; I can never get any of my vaguely meta thoughts out of my brain, so you're way ahead of me, hee.
See, I see it as necrophilia, largely because then I can go "LOL, necrophilia!" and it makes me happy. I think it's because I see necrophilia as gross, but not immoral, so it doesn't bother me that much.
Also, whilst I’m here and being potentially controversial, I don’t think Sam sleeping with a possessed girl is rape. Non-consensual and inarguably morally questionable, don’t get me wrong, but I disagree with the use of rape. Whilst rape is defined basically as non-consensual sex, the term ‘rape’ is so culturally loaded, and the response it generates- particularly in the largely female culture that is fandom- can only be emotionally charged.
See, I don't see how it isn't rape, just because the word upsets people. I mean if we're talking about the Sam/Ruby sex in question, I'd say it isn't rape because the original owner of the body has died, and thus no longer either owns or inhabits the body. But someone's made to have sex against their will due to demonic possession, I don't see any reason not to call that rape. Yeah, the word
( ... )
I'm not saying I don't want to call it rape because it upsets me, I'm saying I don't want to call it rape because it's an inherently loaded term that can easily be used to emotionally manipulate. You say 'rape', people are going to think of a horrible, violent attack. That's black and white. Demon sex isn't.
It just seems like the same arguments could be used about things like drug-rape, and other cases of forcing someone into sex that aren't the horrible violent attack. The basic wrong of rape is having sex with someone without their consent. Whether they get beat up in the process is separate. I don't see why people should avoid calling sex with someone who's trapped in their own body with no control and no choice rape.
