Aw, nuts. Why? Was it as much of source of GM-revenge as the precis makes it sound?

And any chance he'll come back as a lich?

Nah, I was toying with magics that had been known to be unstable (someone else's character had in fact met this same improbable demise four or five sessions ago). I knew the risks and was simply overly confident in the superiority of my luck.

There is no chance of the character returning as anything. He was literally torn to shreds... not even his possessions remained.

My next character has the potential to be the most useless EVER.

True resurection?
Wish/Miricale?

Why is such a device *still* in your party if it can do such terrible things? Why didn't your last group want to destroy it? I hope it has some sort of story/plot purpose beyound that of destroying player characters.

Purhaps you can convince a major villian to use the device as your party has...

We don't play the sort of games where such things would be readily accessible. Nor would the party go to the effort and cost, since we were all evil.

Why is such a device *still* in your party if it can do such terrible things? Why didn't your last group want to destroy it?The device, in this case, was actually forbidden knowledge. We had an ancient text that provided access to extremely chaotic but powerful magical spells. Simply reading the text alone had the potential to drive a character insane (it was heavily based off Cthulhu items and magic). I, however, am extremely lucky when it comes to such things so I successfully managed to learn two spells without dying. One of my companions failed on his first attempts and was destroyed ( ... )
