Ajax meet Big Chick

I am still obsessing over last night's poker losses. This makes seven games in a row that I have lost (basically all seven in which I participated). I have finished in the top three in less than half of those (three games). I know luck is always going to be a factor but this is ridiculous. Did my fellow players get that much better or do I have ( Read more... )

There were two people in addition to the two of us. Because A.& A. had both been pushed out of the game by that point, it was a family pot (of four ( ... )

Why were you first to act on every round? Because nobody else would? That might be the problem right there.

To me betting on an unsuited ace-jack has the same potential danger of the big slick. I'd definitely pay to see the flop with an ace-jack, but without flopping a pair, I'd probably end up folding if I were short stacked. Sure, you have 2 high cards. But like you said, they won't mean anything if someone else lands a pair of sixes.

In your case, you got beat by the cards, not skill. No matter how you played your hand, B. would have called you because of the cards he had- not the position.

Why were you first to act on every round?

The player to the left of the button/dealer is the first to act on every round subsequent to the pre-flop round. Progression is expected to follow the manner in which cards are dealt (dealer deals first to his left, clockwise, last to himself, betting follows the same path). In the first round, because of the two blinds, betting starts with the player three to the dealer's left, but after that on every subsequent round, it's always supposed to be the player who was the small blind who has to be the first to act.

That's why being on the button/dealer is considered a position of strength. You are guaranteed to act last every round except for the first, when you act third-to-last.

That's why I'm uncertain if I should be playing anything except incredibly strong hands in small-blind position in a four-person game, because I am at a disadvantage in every round of betting.

Then again, you don't want to disrespect an ace especially in a relatively small game.
