Let's start with the easier one, because in several ways Marian & Guy and Marian/Guy are the easy ones to get. Especially if you watch season one and season two stopping before the last three episodes (where they suddenly insert an two-dimensional alien into Guy's skin and mind-wipe like ten episodes of character growth).

There is so much going on with these two that clashes. She's from high status, and she's been brought low pre-series. He's from very low, and he's high only because he's licking Vasey's boots. They have absolutely no reason to trust each other and rightfully so

I'm going to skip my first treatise on it, and point to the link above. And instead focus on your two questions.

First on the second question, I don't think Carlisle will ever be a 'love the one you're with' person, or Volterra and Aro would have turned our far differently than it did

Actually the icon doesn't annoy me at all. It doesn't move or talk. >_> (Though this may be the same sort of thing I say about R.P. of Twilight. Stills rarely ever bother me.) I was actually staring at it earlier trying to figure out what exactly was going on in it (Damian is carrying Elena, right?) / where it was from in the show. He really doesn't annoy me all that much really. He's still story integral.

But, oh my, this pairing was so well done. And I have a fondness for Merlin's actor from other roles he's played, and then with him and them.
