So, remember that to-do list I made.  yeah right.  I haven't finished any books, barely revised anything for my novel and have successfully stressed myself out while thinking about a Fulbright scholarship.  It's not just the Fulbright though; there's also a Marshall scholarship I'm looking at, and maybe grad school applications.  All of which

Congrats! Stressing out about the Fulbright is the first step in the process :)
As for why you? Well, I can think of a million reasons, and hopefully, you´ll do the same as you write the essays. Hang in there, and do keep us posted!
