The nearest actual, sucessful equivalent to your idea I can find is altogether more basic. Trevor Bayliss one day saw a news item explaining how difficult it was to disemminate AIDS-related public safety information in Africa- because the batteries used to power radios were expensive and unreliable. His idea? Clockwork radios! Simple, reliable and cheap to run. A factory now exists in South Africa providing both a steady supply of clockwork radios and employment opportunities in a place that really needed them.

I know a company which is doing just that. The educational information is cached, and can be retrieved via satellite TV and internet in rural communities in Asia. They went around asking the people what kind of stuff they wanted information on first, then got it all together. Their outposts are run as franchises in the local communities. Amongst other things, schools use it for accessing up to date and interesting curriculum content.

That is very cool, KJ. Do you know what the company's called? I think I'd like to get a job there. :D

I think the only jobs available atm are in franchise operation, so you'd be living in a rural Thai village earning Thai money -- or possibly somewhere in Cambodia or Africa, but I don't know if they've opened franchises in those places yet or not.
