old meat

Can someone tell me why you can buy a package of meat (steak, for instance), which says "Sell by August 23rd", and then when you reach into your fridge on August 23rd, it's spoiled?  Are store refrigerators colder than mine?  Because that's the only explanation I can come up with.

The real question you need to ask yourself is "would a supermarket relabel its meat close to or even after its Sell By date in order to keep from having to throw away product?"

I have no idea. Did it sit in a hot car too long? Not sealed properly? Is it truly spoiled, or just a little gray from being exposed to air (lots of beef will do this)

Do you need to call and complain?

If I were you I would say that I would and then get sidetracked.
