I think that irritated me most was the bit towards the end when Rob says something about "Don't judge me so quick because she fooled you too.I was very upset and frustrated by the end of the book, but all the loose ends and Rob’s behavior didn’t left me feeling angry… just sad, you know? That being said, that passage you mention was the only bit that irritated me. Like you, Rosalind never fooled me; there were enough hints to assume that she was involved in Katy’s murder somehow. I tend to believe (I’ve read Tana French’s three books), that this author is really deft and artful at painting fully developed characters and complex relationships (and her prose is so distinctive and gorgeous, so worth reading!), but she is not equally good when it comes to build the procedural cop part of the story. I thought the whodunnit was mostly ok (not brilliant, but passable), but I guessed everything quite early -paradoxically, though, my boyfriend read the book and was kinda shocked when he found out that Rosalind was the one who orchestrated the ( ... )

However, he kinda redeemed himself in my eyes in the end -the drunk call left me heartbroken, but I loved that he finally apologized to Cassie and confessed his love for her (it was pretty obvious to me with all the references to Cassie that he was hung up with her, even though he never suspected. His notice of the smallest things about her wasn’t that of a best friend or partner, but of a man who was in love IMO). So I hope Cassie ditches boring Sam for deeply-traumatized but dashingly-handsome Rob --and not just because I find Sam incredibly dull as a character, but because I believe that when you find your soulmate, you have to be with him. Rob and Cassie were a magical duo.

I haven't read the sequel yet, but I'm assuming Rob is nowhere to be found in itYes, Rob never makes an actual appearance, but he is mentioned several times throughout the book -you actually feel that Cassie is so empty with Rob gone from her life that she looks for the reflection of that relationship everywhere she turns. And there’s one moment ( ... )

LOL, it's ok I get super wordy too if you hadn't noticed already. =D

I agree he totally redeemed himself when he called and confessed to her he loved her. Was heartbreaking, especially when Cassie said the bit about "Someone calling looking for Britney." But that's how you know know she didn't hang up on purpose. It was a very deliberate comment. And I don't think it was to hurt Rob or anything, just a comment as a last shared inside joke. *sniff*

Also yeah, ITA with you, he says he didn't realize or suspect that he and Cassie would get together, but from the first day he was commenting on how lovely she was and how he was falling in love with her. Now, I know he said he "stopped falling in love with her and started being her friend" but logically that doesn't happen.

you actually feel that Cassie is so empty with Rob gone from her life that she looks for the reflection of that relationship everywhere she turns. And there’s one moment… Aww poor Cassie! I'm sure she does feel lost without her best friend. I mean that scene towards ( ... )

I really felt that what actually happened in those woods 20 years ago was never the point of this story, but the way these events and its consequences shaped Rob’s personality and how his past defined his present -the effects this tragedy had on him and his adult life.
You know, I totally agree with that and I was glad we did get the look into his mental state and his attempt at recovering the memories. My only problem was with the hair clip thing being found at the current murder scene. It made me feel like eventually there was going to be some solid but strange link between the two cases (like Rosalind trying to set up her dad). Instead it felt more like a simple plot device to get Rob & Cassie digging into the cold case, which could have been done a number of other ways without actually linking the two cases with a solid piece of evidence. All in all though, it actually is a minor complaint considering - as you said - that the story itself is so good.

it left me wondering if Rosalind had been right about Cassie after all (all that ( ... )
