These two are celebrating their 150th anniversary this year. Actually, they already celebrated the 450th anniversary back in 1993, but that's counting since relations between both countries actually began.

Background story:
In 1853, American President Millard Filmore, interested in engaging in commercial exchange with Japan, decides to sign a new treaty with that country. Shortly after that, Japan established commercial links with Great Britain, Russia, France and the Netherlands.
This treaty became known as the Treaty of the Five Nations (1858 ), and it gave Japan the right to establish diplomatic representation within European countries, aside from allowing the opening of various Japanese ports to foreign trade.
At this time, Japan proposed to negotiate a treaty with Portugal, which was signed in August 3rd 1869. The Treaty of Peace, Friendship and Commerce between Portugal and Japan."
