So I totally think that the show knows that Alicia is grey. KNOWS IT. Deep down in its bones. I have always thought that Alicia will do what the 'right' thing is even if it royally screws over other people and yet this episode almost went out of its way to show that if the right thing gets in the way of what Alicia ultimately wants then all bets are off. In my opinion(!). I honestly think that her interactions with Zach were horrible and yet totally understandable if you come at it from the POV of her suddenly realising that she wants to be SA. As a mother it was understandable that she'd freak out initially but the Alicia we know would usually sit with it and then deal with things in a way that is "understanding". Here she freaks out at Zach with barely a second thought and then tells him what to say and how to behave and in a way more reminiscent of how she treats her clients. And if that's not grey then I don't know what is. I think that she's the queen of manipulation but I think that the show DOES know that. Alicia's morally grey

So I totally think that the show knows that Alicia is grey. KNOWS IT. The worrying thing is, and this is mostly second hand because I don't typically seek out show-runners FOR THIS VERY REASON (but not all second-hand, and the second-hand stuff has come from Ripley, so a credible source, imo), the Kings have done many, MANY interviews where they've been completely Julie Plec about Alicia. So when you take what they've (pretty consistently) said about Alicia being 'good' with the kinda murky way the episodes are mostly written... ONCE BITTEN, TWICE SHY IS ALL I'M SAYING! Especially when you add in that I care way more about this one than the other one

Well. The name of the show is The Good Wife, not The Adventures of Alicia Florick.
Alicia's curse is that she's always experienced as a reflection of the "stronger" personalities and motivations around her, even when her own motivations are quite strong.
Of course, in this instance -- running for State's Attorney -- her motivations are not particularly strong.
Over on Previously TV -- the closest thing to the dear, departed TWOP Forums that I have been able to find -- this was not a particularly well-received episode.
But I liked it. The Good Wife has such extraordinary pacing! And who could not love that bizarre TV analysis show that ran throughout in the background.
On Previously TV, posters keep comparing The Good Wife to Nashville and Scandal. I get the comparison -- strong female leads, yada, yada, yada. But The Good Wife is so much subtler and funnier than those two shows.
Hmmmm. I (think I!!!) actually disagree with some of your comments, well, no, just the bit about her being a reflection of the other personalities around her. But I don't know you all that well so don't want to launch into a rebuttle without first making sure you know that I LIVE for television discussion!! And I am all for it if you are! And it's NEVER personal with me. Just putting that out there...!
I liked the episode in general, but I have concerns about the message we're getting regarding Alicia's characterisation and I've been bitten before with this type of thing (BADLY!!) and so I'm a little hesitant.
I've never seen Nashville or Scandal so I can't really comment on the comaprison, but I am ~intimately familiar with Shonda Rhimes and, yeah, I'd be willing to bet actual $$ that The Good Wife is more subtle than Scandal!
