[feels like flying]Over budget and overdue, the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) on the banks of the River Derwent in Hobart, Tasmania, certainly had the northern suburbs locals talking well before its doors finally opened in January, 2011. Resolutely carved into the ancient sandstone cliffs of the Berridale Peninsula, it is a mostly underground ( Read more... )

In my opinion, it's not 'art' but it sounds like a lot of fun. Really well-written piece.

Oooh, that's interesting. I'd love to hear more about why it's not art for you (as you probably gathered from my entry), and also, which bits you mean aren't art, or if you mean all of it or... whatever!

Thank you for reading :)

Thank you! I was super nervous with the non-fiction, but I'm glad it worked/got me over the line for another week :)

You should totally visit! It's very awesome.

I tend to dismiss what I think of as "stunts," as opposed to art--and here I'm thinking of the feelings Damien Hirst stir within me--but this sounds different. At least different in intent.

If anything, you're making me think twice about my opinion. So you're doing the same thing as he does.

I'm not sure if you're referring to the museum as a whole, or one (some) of the individual pieces of art. I don't have much knowledge of any of the artists themsevles so I'm really not sure if any were designed to be stunts.

If anything, you're making me think twice about my opinion. YAY! :)

My sister-in-law and I had a similar conversation after going through the Guggenheim in New York, and in my mind, most of those pieces were pretty traditional modern art. She didn't care for it at all. I thought most of it was pretty nifty.

That's my opinion of MONA, "pretty nifty". Nifty is a great work, btw!

Having also been lucky enough to go to the Guggenheim in NY (and the one in Bilbao), imo, they really don't compare and MONA is my faaaaavourite :) It's far more interactive than either of those were, and with a much, much wider range of exhibits. I was actually really disappointed with the NY Guggenheim.

If you ever find yourself alllllll the way down here, you should definitely come check it out.
