Also, holy crap, woman! GO TO BED! But firstly, THANK YOU! I'm glad you liked the inclusion of Heather because, yes, there is so much more going on underneath what we're being shown [at least, that's what I choose to believe!], and Andy's death, this dissolution of his friendship with Matt, and Heather's rejection of him HAVE to all be playing into his screwed up state of mind.
Also, sneaky meta inclusions are sneaky! Heee! I will convince the masses if it's the last thing I do!
And now? GO TO BED.

As for the one-shot tag, I pretty much always tag my stuff as a one-shot, but every now and then, something happens and suddenly I discover I have another 4500 words left to say so... you never know! Howeverrrrr, Kelly's operation/rehab. would be very tricky to write [I've researched the surgery and likely rehab. options with the intention of writing it, but I'm not sure I can do it justice!].
But, I will say, you never know! And even if there's no second part to this specific fic, there will definitely be Kelly+Matt+Heather+Leslie fic in my future because the dynamic intrigues me!

Thirdly, I'm glad you liked my Matt. I suspect this may not always be the best tactic for him (e.g. with his mom), and with Detective Voight. That's kinda where I was drawing my inspiration for his actions in this. It's like, he's got this belief that as long as people talk[/yell?!] things will work out, but he completely fails to take into consideration the fact that he's dealing with OTHER HUMAN BEINGS who have ideas and motivations of their own and who don't necessarily share his world view or confidence. Anyway. Yes. Matt. That's him!
Re. Heather. I think I wanted to emphasise the point that I think her anger towards Kelly is purely emotion-based, and not fact-based. So all it was ever gonna take for her to warm to him again was a shift in her emotions, and, well, what better way to achieve this! Haha! I am so manipulative!
And loved the premise that, if someone (crucially, Heather, Matt) cared, if someone offered Kelly some kind of absolution (even though I think he's a long way from ( ... )

OMFG! You mean what you've written here literally doesn't change what's happened in cannon. How am I so freaking dumb?
Well, actually . . . I believe it's Post Shonda Rhimes Dissociative Disorder, whereby canon is so traumatic, little bits of subtext and their usage in fic are adopted as an alternative reality.
Seriously, I didn't know until the early hours of this morning that this simple and factual statement was what you meant!

So I'm glad you had Matt being angry and trying to fix it because what else did he think Severide "wanting him to be the first to know" and looking just miserable and nervous at the bar meant?! Not that it's Matt's sole responsibility in their friendship to interpret Severide's actions correctly, it was just that I felt like that scene had a big, impossible to miss "I need your help here or at least tell me not to go" neon sign over Kelly's head. But Matt was too disappointed to be able to see it.
This is new territory right here. Fragile common ground that was always too fresh, and too painful, and too everything else to be brought up for discussion ( ... )
