I have finally figured out how to change the background image. I have come out victorious over the complexities of livejournal.

Okay, I'll try to write you through this but the first thing to know is your going to need the URL of whatever image you want to use. I personally use photobucket.com and upload my own pictures and then I use the URL photobucket gives me.

But the steps are:
At the top of your screen there are drop down menus for "Home", "Journal", "Profile" etc. go to Journal and then click on customize journal

next and the upper right of that screen there will be a box that shows your choice in theme, in that box click on "customize your theme"

then on that screen on the left hand side there are options click on "style"

in that section at the bottom is the options for "images"

it will ask for a background image URL and there is where you would put the URL I talked about earlier, also under that is all the options for reapeating the image and where it is centered on your page etc.
