The man who would be king.

Given the way things are going, he probably will be.

Harper won't get anywhere with his scheme to talk only to local and regional media. I don't think there's a reporter in the country worth his salt that's going to be "more compliant" after seeing how he dosen't get along with the press gallery. No matter who he talks to he's going to get hard-balled because that's what all journalists really want to do to politicians, as tough questions ( ... )

In terms of the Afghanistan situation, my posting wasn't one of surprise. I actually expect nothing less. However, I don't draw the line between butchery in the real world and butchery in the name of war. If one's going to butcher people, no matter their cause and side in the issues, and particularly in this potentially Orwellian-esque conflict, they should call it like it is rather than mumbling to the media about how "unfortunate" it all is as if it were the result of an earthquake or other natural disaster.

As for Harper, the optimist in me hopes very much that his leash will be kept very short, and that the media will do its job. As a side note, I'm fascinated about how, for a political party whose philosophies, as I understand it, include heavy emphasis on decentralization, Harper's government has reigned in so much control to Ottawa adn shut itself up. But perhaps I'm confusing the "new" Conservatives with the old?

Well, again, NATO is calling it like it is. They arn't out to murder every Afghan that moves. Really, you're not going to find a hell of a lot of soldiers from western countries that are happy to go a slaughterin'. Airstrikes arn't really the kind of horrible I meant. Sorry, I should have been clearer - I meant torture, rounding people up, and in extreemis putting them in camps ( ... )
